Foutraque.com parle d'un groupe auquel l'avenir semble sourire; du moins c’est ce que l’on espère pour eux, car ici on a bien flashé sur leur musique et leur style que l’on a découverts au Miz Miz à Paris. Handcrafted Soul est un duo mixe parisien qui réalise une musique très ancré dans la culture populaire américaine. On y trouve de la folk, du country, du rock’n’roll, du blues et ... de la soul. Ce mix est chez eux très bien digéré, aucune brûlure d’estomac et encore moins un arrière goût de mauvais whisky à travers la gorge. Non, chez Handcrafted Soul, la musique est très sophistiquée, mais sans être lisse et sans saveur. La voix de la chanteuse est magnifique. Elle peut à la fois pousser dans les aigus et aussi racler dans le grave. Derrière, la guitare gratouille et chatouille vers divers climats qui vont du folk gracieux au rock « pouilleux » et sale, auquel se mêle un petit air de kazou déglingué et champêtre. Le tout est une musique pleine de charme, qui donne envie de se diriger vers un saloon, de prendre les bras d’un client et de danser comme des damnés sur le plancher qui grince. Quelque part entre Tom Waits et Holly Golightly, la musique d’Handcrafted Soul clignote et pétille dans nos oreilles. Si leur musique a du style, leur apparence aussi. Tous deux portent des habits aux notes kitsch, elle et ses robes frou-frou, talons aiguilles, collants en gambières, et lui vissé d’un chapeau haut de forme, d’un costar rétro, de boots et d’une chemise à jabeau. Ils pourraient jouer dans un film de Tim Burton, de David Lynch ou bien dans un bon western spaghetti, histoire de rajouter un peu de poussière sur leurs beaux habits vintage. Aussi pour vous imprégniez de leur style, jeter un œil sur le leur joli clip The Brat Song aux images animées typé easy listening. C’est une petite sucrerie coloré qui pétille agréablement aux yeux. The song 'You Don't Know' was the first song to catch my attention on their media player, while the title may seem to promise a whiney chorus that will provoke you to drink a generous amount of bleach, but instead you'll get a perky little ditty with a bluesy guitar solo and a catchy beat. There is not an ounce of negativity in this song, spring flings and butterflies could not be this happy, nor could Hallmark produce the amount of colorful little hearts this song makes explode in your head. 'Honeymoon' expresses the joys of loving exactly as you please. Forget who your friends, parents, or therapists tell you to love, just follow your heart. The sex will no doubt be more enjoyable, because it's the cookie jar you weren't supposed to reach into. I'm not sure if this was the exact message Handcrafted Soul was going for, but it's what I got out of it. So take that with two grains of salt. Incase I didn't mention, they have nifty little synth pieces and what not. So imagine if the Soggy Bottom Boys from Brother Where Art Thou, wound up with some happy little indie kid with a mixer. This is that fusion. Having just written that, and having just reread it, I'm not so sure that sounds like a positive thing, BUT IT IS. BECAUSE THESE ARE SOME GIDDY FUCKERS.
